KRISTINA and NAIST

Sept. 15, 2016, 3 p.m.

The AHC Lab at NAIST (Nara Institute of Science and Technology) and KRISTINA share a common interest in natural communication in the health care domain and its cultural characteristics. Therefore, a cooperation agreement between KRISTINA and NAIST was signed in order to pursue a fruitfuil exchange of information among different research institutes.

Furthermore, one of our expert Louisa Pragst (Research Assistant at UULM - Ulm University) has been welcomed at NAIST, in Japan, for a three month research stay. One of the main objective was to enhance the research on the integration of cultural and emotional aspects in the dialogue management. Cultures and emotions are integrated in the dialogue management. In this way, our avatar KRISTINA will be able to perform a natural conversation with the users, helping them to overcome their linguistic and cultural barriers.

The exchange of knowledge brings to an effective implementation of new functionalities within our system. During the research stay, the automatic generation of elaborateness and indirectness was investigated and cultural differences regarding the different preferences in those areas were explored.
