Kristina lands in the center of Madrid

Nov. 19, 2017, 7:49 a.m.

On November 15th, the Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine organized an Information Day at Las Cortes Health Center located in the center of Madrid (Spain). During the event, the second prototype of the avatar Kristina was presented to an audience consisting mainly of family doctors and nursing professionals who showed great interest in the different possibilities generated by the project.

After a first introduction in which the origin of this joint work of the European Union was presented (including the investment within the scientific research program Horizon 2020) and involving 8 different countries, from Greece to Holland through Germany, attendees at the event were interested in the uses that KRISTINA could have beyond the strictly medical field of Family Medicine, as well as the evolution of technical requirements. In this sense, for example, one of the recurring issues before this type of presentations is to ask about the capacity of gestural recognition, expressive and at the management level of the memory of the avatar Kristina. For example, it is expected that in the future, the avatar will be able to remember the conversations with its users, until reaching a point of being able to ask, in the case of the elderly, for the family, the grandchildren or the day to day , or even propose reading the news of the newspaper in the user's native language. In this sense, the nursing professionals who participated in the Information Day, assessed as positive the fact that Kristina also had knowledge about her field of work and could become a tool of advice and support for nurses.

For her part, Dr. Lehdía Mohamed, family physician of the semFYC and who has been involved in the Kristina Project for some time, said that in no case will Kristina be a tool to replace the doctor in the consultations, but that she will be an assistant before overload of care and work. In that sense, the family doctor explained that it is that in the future it will be the doctor himself who prescribes Kristina so that the avatar can perform this role of accompanying the patient in the face of a concern related to their health. That is why it is so relevant that the information provided by Kristina has the scientific endorsement of the semFYC and is adjusted to the scientific requirement, because the patient will trust the avatar and the information it offers when it comes to guiding their behavior self-care or psychological well-being in the face of possible uncertainty regarding their well-being.

Continuing with the debate about the functionalities and competences of the human agent, the Vice President of the semFYC, María Fernández, also present at the Information Day session in Madrid, commented that, although at this moment Kristina always informs the patient of It is essential to consult your family doctor in case there is an issue that for ethical reasons the avatar can not treat (for example, recommend a prescription or directly visit a specialist), it is expected that the avatar ends managing a greater range of skills beyond the strictly relative to Family Medicine and can, in this sense, develop their communication with greater competences in other medical fields.

After the presentation and the questions of the assistants, it was continued to make a test of the second prototype of Kristina. The people who wanted it could ask for information about the various cases that are being worked on in Spanish. In our case, we are moving forward with the clinical scenarios of back pain and breastfeeding, while in the German language, the prototype is able to answer questions about diet and sleep disorders, while at the same time it can be a social companion . Kristina also speaks Turkish and Polish, and an Arabic version is being developed.

The next event organized by the Kristina Project partners will take place in Tübinghen (Germany), in an open day organized by the University of this town and in which invites everyone to try the second prototype and, in this way , to collect the necessary information for the finalization of the final prototype, whose culmination is every day closer after practically three years of research.
